Portable computers popular

According to to ABI Research's Technology Barometer, one in three respondents in the US said they plan to purchase a laptop computer in the first half of 2012. But only 16% of respondents plan to buy a media tablet. Therefore laptops continue to be popular in the portable computers category. However NPD DisplaySearch forecasts that tablets will rise in popularity, growing from 81.6 million units in 2011 to 184.2 million in 2013, and 424.9 million units by 2017. "So far in this relatively young product category, the tablet PC market has been dominated by Apple and has tended to include a number of competing products that are similarly configured to the iPad," NPD DisplaySearch's Richard Shim said. "However, as the market matures and competitors become better attuned to consumer preferences and find opportunities to break new ground, we expect the landscape to change dramatically, giving consumers more choices, which will drive demand for more devices."

Meanwhile ABI Research's Technology Barometer also said that in emerging markets portable netbooks are growing more popular than desktop PCs. And back in the US, Apple laptops hold a 11% share of respondents in the most recent survey. Media tablets based on Android, doubled their share to 6 per cent, while Apple meanwhile its iPad position to 8% of respondents.
