Cooling a Laptop

Advertising
Cooling a computer is all about ventilation, where the fans blow out the hot air, while the cooled air is sucked in through the vents. Cooling a laptop is difficult because the motherboard, hard disk, DVD drive, etc are all crammed into a small space. And keeping it too long on your lap will make the temperature worse, because of your body heat. Dutch firm Nexus Technology has a unique and patented liquid cooling solution. The TDD-9000 is a soft black velvet blanket with a gel-like liquid inside. The patented liquid has unique heat dissipating characteristics and does not need any power. "When you put the laptop cooling pad on your lap you will feel your lap turn colder within 10 seconds," says Michael van der Jagt, CEO of Nexus Technology. The cooling pad is 15.7" long and 11.4" wide; it weighs a mere 506 grams and can be folded up.

Tests show that a laptop reaches a temperature of 50°C after 40 minutes on a regular surface, while on the TDD-9000 it reaches only 36°C in 40 minutes. The pad can be made effective repeatedly by simply lifting it up and shaking it. The Nexus TDD-9000 liquid cooling pad will be available from mid-June 2009 and will sell for $23.00.
